Israel said on Tuesday it approved the construction of 1,600 homes for settlers in east Jerusalem, a move certain to infuriate Palestinians who see settlements as a major hurdle in peace efforts.

Ironically, the announcement came as US Vice President Joe Biden held talks with top Israeli officials during a visit to Israel and the West Bank aimed at promoting a renewal of the hobbled peace process.
